Welcome to the Blue Blog!

Welcome to my blog! My name is Betsy, and I’m a Southern California-based photographer. I'm wildly in love with shooting fresh, candid portraits of LIFE: from expecting moms & families to couples in love & boudoir...and every little detail in between! I love unique weddings, doughy newborns & pets that own their people. And I love learning who someone is and being lucky enough to capture that uniqueness behind the lens.

I shoot on location ANYWHERE! I’m a regular in areas like Southern Oregon and the Bay Area but I love traveling to meet new people and shooting in new places. Give me time to grab my gear and I'm all yours!

So to my clients, friends, and fellow photographers alike…drop me a line and bookmark this page so you can check back often! Feel free to leave me some comments on my blog posts or on new ideas for future sessions.

Thanks for stopping by and have a very blessed day!

A love for all things photography (except being photographed)…

Being in the world of photography has lent itself to having many amazing photographer friends. I love nothing more than spending time collaborating on shoots with other photo pro’s & enthusiasts, or shooting each other from time to time to freshen up our social media & blogs.

BUT, when I was asked lately to actually “M-O-D-E-L” for a friend’s clothing line, while my gal pal Tricia Meteer snapped away, I was instantly terrified. I have never considered myself anything but deranged-appearing in front of the lens. Excited at the idea of “being a model” (LOL) but knowing myself and my complete lack of model-ness, I knew I’d better prepare & practice. But I had no idea what to do. So I prepared myself to have a full scale learning experience…on set. :)

Needless to say , in the fabulous hands of Tricia, as photographer, and our wonderful friend Wanda Goldberg, as my stylist and co-model (she’s such a pro!)…I had a blast! By the end of the shoot, I had no idea whether they’d gotten any usable images from me, but I knew I’d had fun playing model for the day and getting to wander around the wild in sweet Charlotte Norrie’s beautiful Plum Pretty Sugar loungerie goods. Her clothes are, to say the least, YUMMY! And quickly making up more and more of my wardrobe! Especially as my baby bump is progressing outward…they are just soooo comfy and sweet!

Here are a few shots from our play date in the Plum Pretty Sugar line..and check out more on Tricia’s Facebook page album!

Not long after my fun with Tricia on the Plum Pretty Sugar shoot, I received another offer to “model” for another of her shoots. This time it was much more up my alley…I’d be on horseback! Tricia was asked to do some photography for a book by our natural horseman friend, Robin Shen and needed a few horsewomen faces. Needless to say, I was honored!

Here are just a few from our recent shoot with the ponies, but check out Tricia’s Facebook album for more….

So all in all, it’s been a very fun and interesting caveat to BE photographed, instead of just always doing the photographing. And I’m eternally grateful to Tricia for giving me the opportunity, being patient and working with me to get (hopefully) what she needed on both shoots. It’s interesting, as well, that all of this comes during one of the most pudgey and belly-licious phase of my life, so far! God has such a sense of humor!

Be brave, take advantage of opportunities that come your way (no matter how daunting they may seem at the time), and live each day to the fullest.

Hugs,

B

February 26, 2010 - 8:36 am Tricia Meteer - Thank you for being the best pho-tog friend/model/maternity model/pony rider/and all around super beautiful! Your spiritual soul transcends the lens and make my job a breeze! xoxo Tricia

FAQ: Email Questions

Recently, I’ve been spending quite a bit of time answering questions that come in about my work, website, blog, equipment, etc… and have also been asked to mentor a few new photographers. And to top it all off, I EVEN had two sweet gals approach me with requests to intern…da bomb! It is such an amazing feeling to be asked for my opinions and to share my experience…and humbling. I am eternally grateful to God for any talent that I may possess, and also to those who have helped me along the way…offering their opinions, direction, guidance & wisdom.

I remember when I first moved to San Diego, just a little over 2 years ago, and got involved with my local PUG at Jeff & Erin Youngren’s home. The first night, I stood in the corner…waiting. I knew there was goodness to be found there, but I was just a bit timid to go hunting for it just yet. It was when I was perusing the Youngren’s sample albums for the 5th time, that Erin came over and said hello. That’s all it took. From there, I met Jeff, then my friend Bethany, then the McCue’s, and then…and then… These peeps were my kinda people! I hearted them all instantly for their genuine honesty and openness. From then on, I came prepared with a zillion questions and Jeff & Erin never batted an eye in offering assistance. Even when my newly self-designed blog totally blitzed one day, Jeff (who unbenownst to me was just recovering from surgery) miraculously & selflessly rescued it for me! It is people like Jeff & Erin or Justin & Mary Marantz, who have humbly and openly shared their knowledge with me, that inspire me to want to be better and more available to those who ask of my limited knowledge. THANK YOU to those who have shared so selflessly with me! I am eternally grateful!

So, in that spirit, here are some answers to some of the slew of questions that have come my way of late. And THANK YOU, to those who have asked. THANK YOU for every single question. I don’t profess to know much, but I do know what I have learned the hard way, and I’m glad to hopefully save someone else the trouble. I’m not an expert, I’m not suggesting my answers are right…they are just my humble opinions and I’m glad to share them. And hopefully, possibly, maybe help someone out in the process. :)

Not at all! I shoot with two Canon 5DMII’s right now, and love them. My list of lenses is long (due to my significant need for counseling to cure my shopping habit!) but my Fab Four favorites are my 50 mm 1.2 (uber-loved!), 85 mm 1.2, 24-70 mm 2.8, and 70-200 mm 2.8 IS. I have several others, like a fish eye, macro, wide angle, etc… but they hardly ever get used.

Believe it or not, this wasn’t the full extent of Jennifer’s questions…she asked permission first and then sent me a literal list of them! I LOVE it! Heart her… Go get ‘em Jennifer! I can’t wait to see you follow your passion and succeed!

I shot my first paid wedding back in 2002 for a whopping $300!! It was awesome. The bride’s sister hired me, and they were the sweetest family and actually seemed happy with my meager shots. I am still awe struck by the way it all turned out. :)  Especially since I have never had any formal schooling, and hadn’t even attending any seminars at that point. Since then, I have tried to single out some of my most favorite photographers and afford their conferences, webinars & training workshops every year. The best thing I ever did, was attend Kevin Kubota’s Digital Photography Bootcamp, early on. He changed my life! It was at his workshop when I decided that I wanted to truly pursue a full time career in photography. I met the most amazing fellow photographers while I was there, like Craig Strong and Jeff Ebert, who were so encouraging and inspired me to commit. I continued working another job for the first few years until I was able to afford to purchase all of the gear & computer set up (I have always strived to live debt-free) I thought I needed before I jumped in full time to photography. Since then, I’ve never looked back!

I actually don’t use a blogsite, although I have nothing against them. :) I have a separate website and blog, that I built myself (which was fun to learn…albeit ever so SLOWLY). I use WordPress for my blog and enjoy being able to edit both my website and my blog myself.  I’m constantly changing things and even, right now, have so many updates I want to do to them both to continually stay fresh and reflect who I am as a person. I’m a bit A.D.D. when it comes to change…as I, myself, am a constant work in progress. :)

Well, I’m just not really fast enough to use filters when I shoot…so no, I don’t use them at all. I feel like it short circuits my creative juices when I have to manually mess with my gear a bunch. I’m a shoot-on-the-fly type of girl, and post-process works for me if & when I feel an image needs a “filtered” look.

I do 99% of my editing in Lightroom, only pulling files into Photoshop when they need some special lovin’. This keeps my post-processing time to a minimum…which, for those who know me, means a MUCH happier Betsy! I detest lengthy post-process work. I strive to shoot better & cleaner each time, as well as work more efficiently in my post-process, but it’s a work in progress. A work and a process that I want to make MUCH better, as a lesson to me, before I send EVERYTHING out for someone else to do one of these days. :)

I hope this info helps someone out even a little bit, by being shared. And feel free to shoot me more questions on my Facebook page or through the contact form.

Hugs,

B

February 19, 2010 - 2:39 pm Jessica - I like taking classes at local schools, but sometime I feel like they are slow paced. I would totally love to learn more, just for personal use. If you ever need an assist, intern or just want to mentor someone. . . think of me!

February 19, 2010 - 11:53 pm Reuben Poon - One more question......why are you so awesome? :)

February 27, 2010 - 7:57 am Jeff - You're the BOMB :) Love having you as part of our community!! See you Wednesday!

Frank & Jessica’s Engagement | San Diego, CA

In celebration of their recent engagement, I had the joy of doing a fun engagement session for our dear friends, Frank & Jessica. Jessica had the fabulous idea to shoot in a forest, which of course I was stoked about! So she and I set off on an adventure, in the week preceding their shoot, to find a gorgeous sunlit SoCal “forest” to capture some fun shots of their love together. We had a BLAST, both scouting & shooting!

Now if you know Frank & Jess, you understand when I say I never part company with them without having a side ache from laughing so much. They are HIGH-larious and so much fun! So this shoot was taxing…not because they were difficult to shoot, but because my camera vibrated from my giggles all day. I heart them both for that!

So, to my two dear friends, Frankie & JJ… Here’s to many, many more years of side-stitching laughter together, and hopefully some cute mini’s to photograph too, one of these days. I love you both dearly and cherish our friendship. Congratulations on your love, engagement and life together!

Hugs…B

Pet Peeves & Little Known Facts…

PET PEEVES:

Pointless phone calls. “So…what’s up?” “Nuttin…whazup with you?” “Umm…nothing really.” “…” “Cool.” “MmmHmm.” “…”

Being tickled. (And don’t try it, and think it’s funny. I get violent. And our friendship might end up on the line.)

Being scared. (Like someone jumping out of a bush & yelling “Boo!” for no good reason.) Grrr…

Taking your sweatshirt (pants, socks, etc) off by turning them inside out….and then tossing them in the laundry basket that way.

Being woken up for no reason, when I’m SOUND asleep. (Stems from being a light sleeper for eons…and coveting sleep even more so now that I’m preggers!)

Overly critical comments.

Loose change in my car console.

LITTLE KNOWN FACTS:

When I make a BLT, I HAVE to do it all out. Hickory vs. reg smoked bacon, cooked in my Lean Mean Fat Reducing Grilling Machine x George Foreman. Fresh avocado or guac. Market fresh, organic tomatoes. Hand whipped dill mayo. Slightly toasted sourdough bread. It’s an OCD thang.

This may not be “little known” since I post hyper notes about it on Facebook all the time…but I LOOOOOOOOVE Cotton Candy!

l LOVE when it rains in San Diego! Other than the notoriously poor driving skills of the natives, it reminds me of home…and fresh, cleansing, heaven-sent smells of damp pine & wood. Now if I could just talk God into letting it SNOW here…Hmmm…

l adore gift wrapping! I like making my own wrappings out of old maps, or hand painted brown craft paper, or leftover pieces of junk mail. I love it when people *gasp* when they get a present from me.

I’m a stanch non-obligatory gift-giver. I don’t support “hallmark holidays” nor do I like giving gifts on “appropriate” gift-giving days. I love to find special items throughout the year and surprise people with presents, for FUN! Expectation steals honest joy, in my book.

It took me 9 months to build this:   (…and just wait to see what I’m building in the NEXT 9 months!)

I could live in a quiet little cabin in the woods forever. I love solitude.

I can’t WAIT to finally get some chickens in my backyard again. I crave fresh eggs every morning. And feeding them bowls of spaghetti, like my mom always did, until they’re stuffed full!

When living in Oregon, the rainy state, I wore a different pair of high heels almost every day. EVEN when driving my open jeep around town! Now that I live in sunny SoCal, 9 out of 10 days you’ll catch me in either Uggs, rainboots or Rainbow flips! *sigh* I’m complicated.

For every word you might use to describe me, you can also probably describe me with the opposite word. Funny but Serious. Spontaneous Planner. OCD clean…Messy. A dog person who loves cats. Rainboots & Stilettos. Loves snakes…Hates spiders. Hates talking on the phone…Obsessive social media “chatter”. Ranch-loving, grease monkey…City girl. You get the picture…again, I’m complicated.

February 10, 2010 - 9:41 am Katie Neal Photo - Girl...we are SOOO alike. You crack me up! I love you!

February 10, 2010 - 10:51 am Chelsi - SICK! NO SNAKES!!! The rest of it, I giggled at! :)

February 26, 2010 - 9:48 pm Amanda Noyes - Love YOU. Complicated you! Such beauty within you friend.

Recipe Favorite: Crab & Cauliflower Spread

My friend Gail is the queen of experimental dining. She tries out so many new recipes that I don’t think I have EVER tasted the same thing at her house more than once. And dinners at Gail’s house are EPIC! You see, Gail worked for Harry & David for many moons and developed some amazing patterns of passionate cookery…such that “dinners” at her house are better described as “events”! 5+ courses of amazingly tantalizing appetizers, beautifully plated meals and unimaginable desserts…all paired perfectly with fabulous wines (and yes there is an “s” on the end of there…each new plate gets a brand new wine!), spritzers and refreshing concoctions!! She is truly my kitchen mentor (among many other areas of my life) and a very, very dear friend.

I always try and have her share at least one recipe with me, that even my simple little sous chef’s mind can consider tackling. One of my very favorites, that we make (and I actually have memorized) fairly often around my house, is a Crab & Cauliflower Spread. Gail is the ONLY person who has EVER been able to get me to like, and even crave any form of cauliflower! This recipe is super simple to make and feeds a large sized dinner party for appetizers, or keeps us in happy snacking bliss for about 4-5 days straight out of the fridge!

NOTE:  If you don’t like cauliflower, like me, just TRY it once. I promise you wouldn’t even know that’s what it was unless someone told you. Give it a whirl and then leave me some comment love on what you thought.

“Thanks Gail, for always providing kitchen inspiration and giving me a more open mind about new things to try! Love you so much and can’t WAIT for our next meal together, no matter where or what it is!”

Loves…Bets xo

February 9, 2010 - 8:29 pm Betsy - So one of my sweet friends (who obviously hasn't been reading my blog lately) just swallowed her foot whole when she remarked about the "tragedy" of people blogging recipe's on their PHOTOGRAPHY blog. LOL Hasn't she heard I'm pregnant?! Haahaaahaha! I'll try to do better, my friend. THANK YOU for keeping me moving forward!

February 19, 2010 - 12:15 pm Amy - I soooo see a future in food photography! Maybe for MY website :)

Swimsuit Boudoir…holy moly…

I love, LoVe, LOVE when ladies come to me for boudoir to surprise their hubby’s with. It’s such an amazing, beautiful, timeless gift that EVERY hubby is sure to love!

I don’t like waiting until said hubby knows about such deliciousness to post peeks on my blog about it, or pop a new pic up on the website when I’m floored by a fabulous shot!

Now, I know patience is a virtue, but this one just couldn’t wait. I begged my client to allow me to just post one teensy-weensy little image of her gorgeousness on the blog to share the joy. This particular client just happens to have a fitness model body that I’d keeeeeell for! So, in the spirit of wishful thinking (while I eye the ever growing belly baby bump growing like an alien on the front of me), I decided to doctor up one of my favorite shots from Sunday’s seaside boudoir shoot (to conceal it from one lucky hubby), and toss it out there for you all to drool over. WITH my client’s consent, of course!

VOILA!

Yes that is MY face superimposed on HER body. But it COOOULD be me, right?! With a few years of protein shakes and major weight training, I bet my chicken legs would start to look JUST like hers!

Seriously, though, how GORGEOUS is her body? And just wait until you get to see the beauty queen face that goes with it! Amazing! I had a blast shooting with this sweeter-than-pie lady. We spent the better part of a day bouncing from a Melrose-style beachside Inn, to some amazing seaside cliffs, and finally to a gorgeous sunset-lit beach. All the while enjoying the gorgeous weather San Diego had to offer and laughing at our onlookers antics to get closer to the action. “PEOPLE! Do me a favor next time you come across me shooting a breath taking bikini-clad lady on the beach…KEEP WALKING and QUIT DROOLING ON HER! It makes too much sand stick and my stylist has to work overtime!”

Hugs, Bets xo

February 4, 2010 - 9:07 am Katie Neal Photo - You crack me up! Can't wait to see more photos!!! And, excited to see you at STL!

February 4, 2010 - 9:11 am Jeanette - OMIGOSH!!!! SHE LOOKS SOOOO HOT!!!!! Had a blast working with you!

February 4, 2010 - 10:42 am Nicole Benitez - Omgosh!! Love it! She does have a killer body. Your superimposedness cracks me up! Can't wait to see the alien belly bump :-) oxox

February 4, 2010 - 11:19 am Amanda Noyes - Beautiful! You stinkin crack me up. As if you don't have a hot body? Come on now... we all know that you are going to bring shame on all the other pregos with your cute bump.

February 4, 2010 - 1:44 pm Kaia - I love your style. You crack me up too!! So I have been training 4 days a week with a trainer and doing massive runs. When I look like that I'll come to you to record it!! I have no hubby to surprise, though I might by the time I look like her!!

February 4, 2010 - 4:02 pm Kris - Betsy and Jeanette ~ you ladies were a ton of fun!! I wish I could do photo shoots everday along with hair and makeup! ;-) Its because of you two if I look ultra-fab. Thanks for being so wonderful.

The New Normal

If you’re reading my blog (I’m in awe), you’re probably looking for some recent photos I’ve taken, or at least some photography chat. Hmm…alas, today you get this. Pregnancy mumblings. Sorry to disappoint you…truly. I feel a weight of guilt over two things…the fact that I’ve hardly blogged much this past month, and the fact that most of what I think about blogging isn’t about photography, necessarily. It’s just about life. My life. My life of change, right now. So please accept my deepest, sincerest apologies for disappointing your photo-craving eyes with more talk of cravings, nausea and pudgy-belly-syndrome. If you’re already a parent, you’re probably laughing and will read on. If not, you’re probably thinking I’ve lost my edge…am turning in my wings…and preparing to fly a cargo plane full of rubber duckies out to Hong Kong [Top Gun analogy...for those of you who don't have the entire movie memorized].

But this is life, today. For me. The photographer…Betsy Blue. Now with child. If you can, please be patient as the newness wears off and I get back to my job…my love…my photography. And I’ll try to give you something more exciting to look at than this…the epitome of my morning so far:

This Morning: Jesus, chai and a 1/2 a loaf of sourdough

The past 3 days, I have seen the morning sickness cloud of nausea lift. I feel like a new person…rejuvenated and ecstatically appreciating the ability to move about with ease (without carrying a baggie full of saltines & a banana everywhere with me). So, in celebration of what I hope to be the end of the 1st Trimester Plague, as I’m now calling it, I decided to step out in faith….and go to the EARLY service (my fav) at church. As I headed out by myself, with a belly full of raisin bran, into the gloriously sunny morning, I felt alive…and so grateful. I parked in a spot as far from church as I could, so I could enjoy the sunny walk for even longer. After a few hugs & hello’s, I took a seat next to a sweet gal named Kathryn and took in some very inspiring, filling words from Pastor Miles.

Not until I stood up to leave did I realize I needed a plan. And not just a “walk to your car casually” plan. I needed a “lear jet drop off in front of the closest edible item I could find” plan. I was beyond starving…after less than 2 hrs! So, I sprinted (it wasn’t pretty) to the Trader Joe’s next door and snagged a loaf of sourdough. As I stood in line to pay, I realized I was being watched. Not because I was of any normal interest. Not because I was so stunningly graceful in my Uggs and ratty jeans. And not because I was patiently waiting to pay before I partook. I was being eyed by several because I was voraciously devouring that loaf of SD…grasping handfuls at a time, as crumbs flew through the air and coated my hair and shirt, shoving them into my now dry-as-a-bone mouth. It was a beautiful mess.

I didn’t even remember leaving the store on my way into the next door down…Starbuck’s. Now, I know I’m going to pay for this confession, even as I type…but it’s the truth…and part of my hilarious morning. My hubby will probably put me on lock down when he reads this, since I agreed technically, truthfully (STUPIDLY) not to have caffeine while pregnant…BUT… :) I HAD to have something to wash that bread down, right? A little caffeine is good for the baby, right? [sheepish grin]

*

ME:  [coming out of my hunger daze] Hi. Wow! You look just like Zooey Deschanel or that girl off Gilmore Girls! Gorgeous eyes, girl!

ZOOEY-LOOK-A-LIKE BEHIND THE STARBUCK’S COUNTER:  Thank you! I get that a lot. [big grin]

ME:  I bet. May I please have a Soy Chai w/ no foam to go with my loaf of sourdough here?

ZOOEY-LOOK-A-LIKE BEHIND THE STARBUCK’S COUNTER:  Sure! Quite a meal! What’s your name?

ME:  Yes. I’m pregnant. [because that statement seems to excuse me from just about ANYTHING these days] And it’s B-E-T-S-Y…Betsy.

ZOOEY-LOOK-A-LIKE BEHIND THE STARBUCK’S COUNTER:  Congratulations! I’m not going to charge you for soy, either Betsy, because you’ve put a huge smile on my face today! [writes B-E-S-T-Y on my cup]

ME:  Awww…that’s very nice. Thank you.

ZOOEY-LOOK-A-LIKE BEHIND THE STARBUCK’S COUNTER:  No problemo Mommy-to-be! Enjoy your day! [another big grin]

ME:  You too Starbucks-girl-who-looks-like-Zooey. [big grin] And may God richly bless your week!

A new normal…and a renewed understanding of everyday blessings and opportunities to love that are right in front of us.

Hugs,

B

January 24, 2010 - 7:27 pm Shannon - Oh my goodness Betsy...you are hilarious!! Thank you for making me laugh and I so wish I could be there to witness your pregnancy. It makes my own pregnancies seem they were'normal' hearing what you are doing. Hahaha! And I believe a little caffeine is ok, at least I hope so....I had tea while pregnant with both my kiddos and they turned out great (at least I think so:)) Love you girl!!

January 24, 2010 - 7:49 pm Paigie - Ooooohhh I love it! Love YOU! Your such a good writer Bets! Your the best Besty! i can totally see you in TJs today ( yeah I can abbreviate too sugar), I would have died laughing! Love you Busty! I mean Butsy... No sorry i mean Betsy!

January 25, 2010 - 12:20 pm Amanda Noyes - I seriously was laughing... I can hear your voice, picture flying sourdough, and see focus in your eye as you dart. If this is your new normal- be excited. I pray you love pregnancy just as much every other day. I love you and miss you sooooooooooo much.

January 25, 2010 - 3:22 pm Jessica - And see. . . she didn't spell your name wrong. . . she could see that you're absolutely the BEST and therefore made a pun of the spelling of your name and just wanted to remind you that B-E-T-S-Y is the Best-y.

March 2, 2010 - 8:40 am luckypenny - Just stumbled on your site and love it -- my name is betsy too, and I got a good laugh out of the "besty" on your cup. I get that all the time and it makes me a little sad for the phonetic spelling abilities (or lack thereof) of the world...

A loooong time in between…but BIG NEWS for Betsy Blue!

I know. This is the longest I’ve ever gone between blog posts. But trust me when I tell you…I have a veeery good reason for being so remiss. I’ve been a bit out of commission this past month. What, you’re wondering, could possibly keep me from my blogging for so long? Well…I said it was important, didn’t I? And I make a habit of telling the truth.

You might want to sit down. This may come as a bit of a shocker. It sure did to us. We didn’t know it was possible. But God is soooooo good. Overwhelmingly good!

The Tomasello’s….miraculously…

ARE EXPECTING!!!!

January 20, 2010 - 12:43 pm Grandma Sharon - When I heard the news I cried just to know how God works in such mysterious ways. I can not express how happy I am for my son and daughter in law. I know they will be the best parents ever. I am planning on a road trip so get ready for Grandma

“I like the PONY, Maarmie!

Growing up, my brother was all about trains while I was all about horses. Wait…actually, I still am all about horses! Anyway, my mum…Marmie as I call her, in her ever amazing creativeness, made Michael and I custom Christmas stockings…needlepoint, velvet backs and all! And, of course, Mikey’s had a train on it and mine had a horse. Actually I think it’s probably just a stick horse, but a horse nonetheless. With a fluffy chestnut mane! And we loooooved our stockings! Marmie even sewed in a zippered edge, so we could “double check” to make sure we got everything out in all the Christmas morning excitement. Yes…we were (are) that bad.

Every Christmas I LOVE, love, LoVe hanging my stocking. Even empty, it’s the most beautiful thing..conjuring up happy, warm, cozy, family-time memories. I remember Marmie & Papa alway trying to sneak in some goodness (like a tangerine) amongst the Almond Roca, bubble-tape, Abba-Zabba’s, new stretchy mittens and little goodness packing that stocking TIGHT! SILLY PARENTS! Christmas morning is for mouthfuls of candy before you’ve even brushed your teeth…followed up by a tummy-gorging dose of Marm’s Cinnamon-Marshmallow Pop-overs! Oh my mouth-watering goodness!!!

I hope you are having a wonderful, joyous holiday season so far…and taking time to appreciate all the truth & goodness this special season has to offer!

Merry Christmas & much love,

Bets

Cowgirls for a Cause UPDATE: The General in general need

Ever since our newest equine rescue, The General, came to live with us after his extended time on the track, he has been a doll! The sweetest big boy you’ll ever meet…loves his peeps and loves his new pony pack! Unfortunately some much anticipated donation promises have yet to come through and my dear friend Tricia at Equinox Farms (The General’s current home…lucky boy!) has been fronting all of General’s feed, supplements and care since his arrival.

Ever since we started Cowgirls for a Cause, I have had so many wonderful friends & acquaintances ask how they can help. And I always told them we’d let them know.

So….with the spirit of Christmas in the air, I am asking (unbeknownst to Tricia & Wanda!) anyone who might be interested, or for those that have been wondering how they can help, to make a donation towards The General’s feed for this coming month. Anything will help…cash (obviously), feed donations, shavings, supplements, etc.. It costs roughly $175 each month for The General to have a full belly and a stall full of shavings each day…THAT’S IT! Everything else is taken care of.

I’m not usually one to ask for help (ask my husband), but I figured $175 is probably just a few cents more than what most of us spend at Starbuck’s in a month. And in exchange for your frothy Gingerbread Latte, a dark faced sweetheart gets a new chance at life.

Consider it, pray about it, talk it over with your spouse. If it’s something laid upon your heart to do, please just drop me an email with your intentions or send a check/money order made payable directly to Tricia Meteer to:  P.O. Box 12682, La Jolla, CA 92039. I PROMISE EVERY SINGLE DIME OF IT will end up in General’s skinny little belly!

Thanks for the thoughts. And because a blog post is always better with a few pictures, here’s a few recent shots of The General out getting to be a normal horse. xo

The General’s very first ride with Cowgirls for a Cause girls! He did GREAT!

The General's very first ride with us...such a good boy!

December 21, 2009 - 7:05 pm Tommy - General is such a great looking horse and Cigar is just as studly. It is awesome that not only were both of them saved, but also both of them cruise the stable together chatting about how hard life USED to be. Great organization!

January 12, 2010 - 8:49 am Tricia Meteer - To my cowgirl partner, thank you so much for blogging about our beautiful boys! One step at a time, one horse at a time! We are so blessed to have the ability to make a small difference!!

Sunbeams & Sweetness

While I was busying putting some more festive touches on the house in between editing a wedding, Duke was taking a post-bath nap on his bed in the office. I paused, as I often do, so many times to give him little kisses & appreciate the depth of his snoring while I bustled around getting things done. But watching him sleep, curled up so tight, in a dark little corner of the house, I suddenly had a burst of emotion well up. It’s been happening more and more. It starts with that gripping feeling in my tummy, the quivering of my chin, sucking in of my lip…and eventually the tears spill over and I end up curled up with him on his little bed, playing with his toes or rubbing his ears while I tell him what an amazing dog he is and how grateful I’ve been these past 12 years to have him in my life. That’s when I inevitably notice the spread of his grey…on his chin, face, a bit over his brow now, between his toes, sprinkled on his legs. And I notice the hollow of his face, his spine showing through that gorgeous glossy coat a bit more, the callouses on his feet from dragging them a bit on his walks.

So, I decided that on THIS day, his office bed just wasn’t going to cut it. It wasn’t good enough for my sweet, charming old man…damp still from his coconut-scented bath. So I bribed him up & out of his slumber and listened to his sleepy padding feet follow me into the bedroom. To the brand new California King, Temper-Pedic bed…covered in fine Portuguese sheets…layered in Hungarian goose down & Pottery Barn deliciousness. And as we walked in, I felt the temperature rise from the warm sun pouring in through the windows…right onto the bed, heating it…readying it for him. And after clearing off all the bed “fluff” of pillows & throws to make more room, I patted the edge to let him know the special surprise I had woken him up for.  His big brown doe eyes lit up: “What? Mom? Really…YOUR bed? ME?!” And as I carefully lifted his waning 90+lbs up onto the delicious cozy softness of the bed, he literally sunk into the heated spa blissness of it all. There was no turning of five circles as is customary now when he beds down…in fact I had to push the rear of him the rest of the way into the center of the bed due to his front end collapsing in pure heavenly joy the minute it made it up.

And a nap above all naps ensued. A deep, warm, cuddled in the bosom of bliss, snoring, dreaming of fresh mountain lakes & chasing deer through the woods, drooling, heavenly sleep. His damp ebony fur turned to warm, dry fluffiness in no time. His joints ceased their popping. His old body rested, warm & completely loved. His joy. My joy.

He is my other eyes that can see above the clouds; my other ears that hear above the winds. He is the part of me that can reach out into the sea. He has told me a thousand times over that I am his love; by the way he rests against my leg; by the way he thumps his tail at my smallest smile; by the way he shows his hurt when I leave without taking him…sick with worry when he is not along to care for me. When I am wrong, he is delighted to forgive. When I am angry, he clowns to make me smile. When I am happy, he is joy unbounded. When I am a fool, he ignores it. When I succeed, he brags. Without him, I am only another being. With him, I am powerful. He is loyalty itself. He has taught me the meaning of devotion. With him, I know a secret comfort and a private peace. He has brought me understanding where before I was ignorant. His head on my knee can heal my human hurts. His presence by my side is protection against my fears of dark and unknown things. He has promised to wait for me… whenever… wherever – in case I need him. And I expect I will – as I always have. He is just my dog.” – Gene Hill

Best friends evaaah!

I truly have been blessed with SO many amazing friends since moving to SoCal! I miss getting to see my home girls in Oregon, and was very bummed to move hundreds of miles away from them. But God always provides, and provide He did! I am surrounded by loving, supportive, creative, energetic, honest, genuine friends and I’m so grateful!

Just the other day, my friend Amy called out of the blue to tell me how incredible the new website looks and how amazing she things my work is. Seriously…HEART HER!

And my friend Reuben took time out of his day to go over a new pricing structure with me (he’s a numbers man…I’m SO not) and collaborate on some ideas we have together. Seriously…HEART HIM!

And then I just received THIS insanely amazing email from my friend Tricia. Seriously…H E A R T   H E R  ! ! !

T Ltr

I have friends that I shoot with (Check a few posts down for my recent shoot with Bethany…so fun!), ride horses (T…I must get on General, SOON!), exercise (Amy, we’re still on for Friday at the lake, right?!), share my couch (Glad you came this week Amanda!) & spend good QT, have FABulous girls’ breakfasts (Like this past Sunday at Gio’s!), hit the beach with, and sooo much more. I just wish I had more time in the week to spend even more time with them, but my friends all seem to be so very patient! To which I’m, again, eternally grateful.

So seriously…A HUGE hug to each of my sweet, special friends! THANK YOU GUYS for all of your love, unending support, patience and inspiration! I am beyond blessed by each one of you every day and cherish our time together!

Sweet Loraine & Handsome Hans…

This couple and wedding are an absolute fairy tale come true! I can’t say enough about Hans & Loraine. For as short of a time as I have known them, I have grown to love, respect and admire them. Their lives are a testament to following your calling and having faith in God! And I’m so very blessed to be able to call them my friends!

Hans & Loraine’s glorious wedding was set on the breathtaking grounds of the Torrey Pines Lodge in La Jolla, CA. Even though rain was in the forecast, as the ceremony commenced, gorgeous beams of sun burst onto the scene and lit up the crowd of family & friends who had come from all over (even a daughter & son-in-law from England..who were adorable!) to celebrate.

Here are a few sneak peeks into their intimate and extraordinary wedding day…

Loraine’s bouquet wrap was custom-made from her own mother’s wedding dress…SO BEAUTIFUL and so very special!

IMG_7493IMG_7506

Hans’ three handsome sons not only looked sharp, but were open to just about anything when it came to photo-ops! So GQ, and so much fun.

IMG_7636IMG_7656IMG_7666

Loraine’s daughters were just as beautiful as they were sweet, and their love for Loraine was so evident. The three of them made me miss my mum so much!

This is my favorite shot from Reuben, who second shot for me during the wedding. He ran upstairs to capture this from the balcony…GORGEOUS!

HANS & LORAINE:  You are two incredibly remarkable people. From the bottom of my heart, congratulations on your nuptials and blessings on what I already know is going to be a fairy tale marriage! I’m so blessed to know you both and look forward to more time together in the future!

And this is the BE-A-YOU-TIFUL reason sweet Loraine and I first became friends, and how I was blessed enough to be a part of Hans & Loraine’s special day…our amazing friend Susan! Susan…I love you with my whole heart and cherish you in my life. You are a special friend, mentor and confidant to me. THANK YOU!

We know God has given her a special husband. Your pictures were fantastic. By the way, I amd Laura Leach's mom. Thanks, Betsy.

Purple Balloons

It’s not very often that I can say my skills were challenged by purple balloons and some gusting wind, but that was the hurdle today on a fun peer-to-peer shoot with Bethany Murphy and her midget pup Goliath.

Bethany had a fun idea to shoot with her adorable 2 oz (not really…probably less!) chihuahua, Goliath, and some balloons, in her signature purple color, to use on her website & marketing goods. I had her meet Duke & I at Lake Murray and took her to one of Duke the Dog’s favorite little dirt roads. It was perfect! That is until the wind started gusting off the water…taking Bethany’s lovely locks and her bundle of balloons into flight. She…was a beautiful mess! But we had a blast and got some really fun shots!

We reversed rolls at the very end for a few quick shots of Duke and I, with my new vintage Eastman accordion camera…so fun! Stay tuned on her blog for a sneak peek of those.
