Welcome to the Blue Blog!

Welcome to my blog! My name is Betsy, and I’m a Southern California-based photographer. I'm wildly in love with shooting fresh, candid portraits of LIFE: from expecting moms & families to couples in love & boudoir...and every little detail in between! I love unique weddings, doughy newborns & pets that own their people. And I love learning who someone is and being lucky enough to capture that uniqueness behind the lens.

I shoot on location ANYWHERE! I’m a regular in areas like Southern Oregon and the Bay Area but I love traveling to meet new people and shooting in new places. Give me time to grab my gear and I'm all yours!

So to my clients, friends, and fellow photographers alike…drop me a line and bookmark this page so you can check back often! Feel free to leave me some comments on my blog posts or on new ideas for future sessions.

Thanks for stopping by and have a very blessed day!

Addicted to Mia… (the official arrival of sweetness)

For those who have yet to hear the roar on the street…SHE’S HERE!!! Born Monday, August 23rd at 3:14 am…following 38 weeks of gestation, 3 months of bedrest, and 26 hours of “Sweet Jesus, please let her come NOW!” labor….weighing in at 7 lbs 11 oz and 20″ long….we are thrilled beyond measure to welcome sweet, perfect, healthy Miss Mia Jane Tomasello to our little family!

Until you have a child of your own, words cannot describe to you the kind of love I feel these days for our sweet baby girl. It’s a surreal, all-encompassing, indescribable, knocks-you-on-your-back, eternal, kind of love. A love that melts your heart and your reasoning all at the same time. A love that puts EVERYTHING in perspective and shows you the meaning of depth and dedication. A love that draws you closer to God.

I am officially addicted to Mia…

Oregon Family Photography: The Reiss Family

To say I love new clients, sounds…well…cheesy. It sounds like something you’d find in a cheap marketing books. Well…I’m not much of a marketeer. I can actually freely say that I suck at marketing myself. I also suck at sales. I’m a little kid with a camera who LOVES sneaking stealth shots of people when they’re not looking. I’m the girl that rambles on to clients about “making it work for them” and then realizes in the end that I talked myself right out of any profit. I’m just a girl who loves to get to know people. I love getting to know their in’s & out’s…their quirkiness…their passions…their stories. And I love when I’m able to capture all of that through the lens.

One more thing I TRULY love? When fabulous friends, who also happen to be clients, refer their other fabulous friends to me to “do what I did for them”. And when the referring client gets just as excited to see the newly referred clients’ shots as we are…that’s my kind of passionate person! THAT’s the kind of peeps I love to hang out with. :) And that’s the adorable situation with my sweet friends, The Boutwell’s, who referred their sweet friends, The Reiss’, to me to capture the beautiful joy of their little family.

Not only did I have a blast capturing the adventurous Boutwell Family (check it out here), but the Reiss’ were obviously cut from the same cloth. They were adorable, fun, and open to whatever I had in mind. And when it came to their choice of album covers? I have three little words for you…Lime Green Leather! GORGEOUS and soooo much fun! So obviously I wanted to do a fun album design to go with it…full of color, joy and the boundless energy that is their kids.

Here’s just a snippet of their joy for you. But be warned…it’s contagious!

July 27, 2010 - 7:48 pm Nicole - Great shots as usual Bets- love the vintage truck in the background. Much love on your final days/weeks of bedrest and cooking lil peanut- I'm sure you can't wait for her arrival!!!! Hope all is well :) Nicole

July 28, 2010 - 11:55 pm Christy Henry - Too beautiful! What an adorable family, and Bets, you sure captured their spirit :)

July 29, 2010 - 9:54 am Danielle - Of course the pictures are awesome as ususal, but I especially love this album layout. Like the scrapbook you always invisioned but could never do yourself. Looks great!!

Mo·ti·va·tion [moh-tuh-vey-shuhn]

mo·ti·va·tion [moh-tuh-vey-shuhn]

noun

1 : the act, process or condition of being motivated
2 : a motivating force, stimulus, or influence : incentive, drive

This week has been a continued week of challenges:  ongoing bed rest & meds to keep our sweet baby girl growing INSIDE of me instead of a NICU, cracks in our new home’s slab foundation, financial balance between our home construction and my not working, broken water pipes in our temporary condo, family health issues, not owning a large enough share of Anthropologie to allow me to walk in the door and just take anything I want…the list goes on and on.

It’s always interesting to me the rate at which obstacles can appear once the first one is brave enough to step inside my door. It’s like a Wii hurdle competition…after the initial shock wears off, I’m deftly leaping over each new hurdle like they were an ugly loafer in the shoe aisle at Nordy’s Half-Yearly sale. But after a few laps, I feel my motivation wane and I lose focus on the finish line. I start looking at my feet instead of at the prize. I trip on a few but continue to push on until I feel like I’m too weak to go on. Shuffling, hobbling, limping in between each new hurdle, it’s then that I look around and see that I’m not alone. I don’t have to continue on by myself…I’m flanked by my hubby and surrounded by amazing family & friends who are all running along side of me to make sure I clear each jump…passing me water & shouting encouragement. And when I fall flat on my back…I’m reminded to look up, to my amazing Lord, who conquered all of this before me, and so very much more.

So I had to cancel a few months of shoots!…those of my clients who can wait and who love the work I do for them, will still graciously be there when I’m back on my feet.

So my kitchen’s torn up & soaked through!…my incredible friend and landlord just showed up with a plumber and brought me a hot sandwich for lunch and took sleepy Duke out for a midday potty break.

So we’re on a tighter budget than we thought we’d be for the pre-baby house construction!…eating leftovers instead of dining out and finding a crib on CraigsList versus the window at Pottery Barn is NOT going to kill me.

Who am I to complain? Who am I to stress or worry? What do I really have to fear? Nothing! Absolutely nothing! No hurdles, no speedbumps, no pitfalls, can change the course I’m on…onward & upward!  No scabs, no bruises, no scars, are going to change the person I am inside…they make me stronger & wiser! And who can’t use more wisdom?! :)

And really…bed rest? All the motivation I need to get over my A.D.D. and bypass my always-on-the-go personality, is contained in this adorable little growing bundle stuck to the front of me. All I need to do is glance down at little Peanut in her cozy womb…and my body’s staying planted in this bed! We definitely need at least one more belly bump snapshot for her nursery wall pano!

The motivation to stay the course, to focus on others rather than my own minor woes, is here. And it’s not going anywhere!

Watch out hurdles…you’ve met your match!

Eyes fixed on the prize,

Betsy  xo

June 13, 2010 - 1:59 pm Kris - Aww...beautiful words, beautiful story, beautiful profile. :-) You're BEAUTIFUL B! :-)

June 13, 2010 - 4:37 pm Linda Matthews - Betsy you are amazing. Sabrina will only be cuter to shoot...you are well worth the wait. And yes 'your peanut' needs more time to cook...we learn more from our trials than our success. Peanut will well be worth all this rest.

June 22, 2010 - 11:38 am Ali Brooks - Betsy...you're soooooooooooo beautiful inside and out! Remember ~ "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you,I will uphold you with my righteous right hand"....you're NEVER alone~ XoXo

July 11, 2010 - 10:28 pm Vicky - Hang in there, it is worth it... bed-rest and all, I promize x1000! PS. You crack me up, I wish I too owned a large enough share of anthro:)

July 20, 2010 - 1:23 pm Justice - I love the pics. Make it to 8 months!! Can see the boobies growing along side the belly. Stay strong. I know bedrest is tough.

Southern Oregon Family Photography – Album Snapshot

Just a quick snapshot of a random album page design I did for the ever adorable Reiss Family! There’s was one of the few sessions I was able to get in before I was ordered on bedrest with the baby bump. Lucky Me! to get to capture such cuteness with them back in my gorgeous hometown of Medford, Oregon! Stay tuned for a full post of their adorableness…

June 12, 2010 - 9:17 am Kirby - Nice design, & cute moment lol. Looking forward to seeing more of that Medford goodness.

San Diego Wedding Photographer – Kristine & Uriah Married!!!

I’ve been dying…truly dying to blog this wedding! Kristine and Uriah are some very special people and their wedding was a perfect reflection of that. From the unique handmade details, to the spectacular garden setting…their Fullerton, CA wedding was AMAZING!

I first had the pleasure of meeting Kristine last year when she asked me to set up a boudoir party for her and her gorgeous bridal party, at an adorable home on Coronado Island. All the ladies wanted to do some very special, beautiful boudoir to surprise their men…and Kristine had special plans to surprise Uriah with a full boudoir album as a wedding gift! LUCKY GUY! Needless to say, we all had an absolute blast shooting all day and it sounds like Uriah was truly blown away by his gift!

After the boudoir shoot, Kristine graciously asked me if I would shoot their wedding…all the while keeping our previous relationship a secret from Uriah. To say the least, I was absolutely honored and stoked to have the extra secret to add to the excitement as well!

In the meantime, my hubby and I found out we were expecting our first child, so I decided to assemble a Rockstar Team to assist me for Kris & Uri’s big day…just in case my bulging belly got in the way. :) I was beyond blessed to hire Edmund Prieto and the adorable Katie Neal to share the joy of the shoot with me, and then was blown away to have Chris Kirby volunteer to come along as well! What a spectacular team to work with! We had an amazing time and I’m so grateful to the three of them for lending their talent. Muah!

Check out some of my favorite details…

I loooove doing ring shots…can you tell? :)

Isn’t the Muckenthaler Mansion gorgeous?

I had our team split up for some detail time with the ladies and the gentlemen.  While Katie and I were off shooting the ladies…

…the guys were having a full on photo-party w/ Edmund and Chris! I LOVE how playful everyone was!

Seriously…dapper just doesn’t cover it for those men!

And when it came time for the ceremony, God shone the most breathtaking golden light in through the palms. The slight breeze, that warm afternoon light, amazing energy & excitement, all the glorious colors and fresh garden greens, sweet spring smells…it was absolutely perfect!!!

I truly loved their pastor’s honest message of love and was blown away by Kristine’s brother singing a Oh, It Is Love by Hellogoodbye, while playing the Ukulele. I HEART THE UKULELE!!! :) So sweet!

After the ceremony, Kris and Uriah were so generous with their time and allowed me ample to cover my most FAVORITE part of photographing a wedding…those special moments immediately following the ceremony with the “just married” couple. So emotional, inspiring and absolutely gorgeous!

After an incredible dinner (of which our entire team was so generously allowed to partake in!), some hilarious as well as heartfelt speeches, and quality time out on the lawn, the party got underway!

And after much celebration, this picture perfect couple was famously ushered to their getaway car by glorious sparklers held by all the guests! Such a beautiful ending to a beautiful day.

Kristine & Uri…thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to be a part of your special day. You are two genuinely amazing people and make such a wonderful couple together. I pray the Lord heaps years of blessings on your marriage and life together. I can’t wait to see what He has in store for you!! All my love & best wishes…B

On my recent adventure to Oregon, I was lucky enough to catch up with one of my favorite 2 year old’s for her birthday party in the park. Paige is who I’m current modeling Little Miss Peanut after, in the womb….she is a DOLL! Here are some quick shots of the fun…
Love you Miss Paige!!! xo Auntie B

Boudoir Photography in San Diego – Fabulous Cliffside Swimsuit Session

I know…you’ve been so patient. You keep reminding me…I promised. So, after the cat was out of the bag and her lucky hubby finally received his super-fabuluscious (I can invent words when it’s THIS fabulous, right?!) album, I FINALLY get to blog a few amazing shots of the oh-so-gorgeous cliffside swimsuit boudoir sesh I did a few months back.

We had SUCH fun shooting in and around sandy cliffs, rappelling down to the beach (yes, several months prego AND carrying all my precious gear while dangling down the side of a cliff with my client and stylist was monumental!) and laughing the entire time. This gorgeous girl was such a trooper! And she totally rocked this fun shoot AND had crazy stories to tell her hubby when it was all over…such a fun experience!

My stylist on this shoot (and so many of my boudoir sessions!) was the amazing Jeanette Crutchfield, and she was the best cliffside partner I could have asked for! Never a complaint…just pure excited energy and I swear she can second guess what I need before I even ask for it. Makeup, hair, styling, reflecting, bag hauling & a hoot to boot! She is TRULY a gem…I’m so glad to have her around!

ALWAYS a unique adventure and ALWAYS an absolute blast!! I love my boudoir clients! xo

May 7, 2010 - 12:16 pm Katie Neal Photo - LOVE LOVE LOVE em girl! I think this is my fave boudoir shoot you've ever done! So beautiful!

Maternity Photography in San Diego, CA ~ Matt & Christy

To say that this couple is the coolest, doesn’t even begin to describe it. If I told you all the amazing-ness they hold in their lives, you wouldn’t believe me. They are truly a unique, amazing, blessed pair and I’m so grateful to call them friends.

Matt & Christy don’t just live on boat in a marina off the coast of San Diego. They don’t just randomly use umbrellas as sails while they skateboard together. And they certainly don’t just make my heart melt with the love they share for their soon-to-be-here little baby boy. They OWN it! This couple inspires me to live simpler, say less & mean more, share more of my time with others, create more joy in every little detail, and be a better mate…they are truly some of the most special people you may ever meet. Here’s a quick glimpse into their Land of Love with the baby boy who is soon to be blessed to join their journey through this world…

Oh yes…did I mention they rule the boards? Skate, surf and I’m sure snow as well! Seeing as I ALWAYS end up on my derriere, this is one talent I covet and respect them highly for. *sigh*

Their little nautical home is the cutest thing you’ll ever see! And they even have a wash machine on-board that washes and DRIES clothes all in one little unit! Boggles my mind!

I think Matt’s offering Christy the world on a string here… :)

April 21, 2010 - 9:13 am sheri - So cute! I love that you've captured the essence of them! My in-laws live on a boat, too... so fun!

April 21, 2010 - 1:34 pm Ali Brooks - Betsy, you never cease to amaze me. Your words made me feel like I already know them. You really are an amazing artist inside and out Bets!

April 21, 2010 - 1:43 pm Ali Brooks - Oh...and the last shot of you and them....=WOW! God sure did create a beautiful world for all of us to enjoy didn't he.

April 21, 2010 - 1:53 pm Lee Anne - They are ADORABLE!

April 22, 2010 - 9:47 pm Lindsay Chavez - Ohmigosh! They live on a boat! They seem like such amazing people. That is one blessed kid! Thanks for your gorgeous images! :)

April 29, 2010 - 7:26 pm BetsyLa Vida - What an adorable couple! Very cute images, Betsy! So sweet and natural. Love it!

May 6, 2010 - 8:29 pm Amanda Noyes - Love that you captured them so well. They are all that you say they are and more. Way to give the world a glimps of some incredible people.

May 22, 2010 - 1:40 am Christy Henry - Thanks, Bets! What a blessing to have a friend like you to share this season with and what a blessing to have your amazing skills to capture this all on film for us to treasure forever. :) You rock my world!!!
